Instagram is taking significant strides to enhance the safety and well-being of its younger users by introducing Teen Accounts, which will automatically enroll all current and future teenage users into a specialized app experience with built-in protections. Starting Tuesday, any account identified as belonging to a teenager will transition into a Teen Account, a move aimed at providing a more secure and controlled environment for young users. The new Teen Accounts come with a suite of enhanced protections designed to limit potential risks for teenagers. These protections include restrictions on who can contact teens on the app, allowing messages only from people they follow or are already connected with. Additionally, teens can only be tagged or mentioned by those they follow, reducing the likelihood of unwanted interactions. Instagram is also implementing automatic filters to remove offensive words and phrases from direct messages and comments on posts, ensuring a safer online environment. Moreover, sensitive content such as depictions of fighting or promotions of cosmetic procedures will be restricted from the Explore page and Reels, further safeguarding teens from inappropriate material.
In response to ongoing concerns about screen time and digital well-being, Instagram is introducing new features to help manage how much time teens spend on the app. Teens will receive notifications to close the app after one hour of daily use, and Instagram will automatically enable Sleep Mode between 10 PM and 7 AM each day. During Sleep Mode, notifications will be muted, and the app will send auto-replies to any direct messages received, encouraging teens to rest without the constant interruptions of social media. Previously, Instagram only nudged teens to close the app if they were using it at night, but now Sleep Mode will apply universally to all teen accounts, regardless of whether parents have set their own limits.
Parental supervision is another critical aspect of the new Teen Accounts. Instagram is rolling out updates that allow parents to monitor their child’s activity more effectively. Parents will be able to see who their teen has messaged in the past week, providing insights into their interactions without accessing the actual content of the messages. This feature enables parents to identify and address any potentially problematic interactions, fostering a safer online experience for their children. Additionally, parents can set custom daily time limits and block their teen from using the app during specific nighttime hours, offering greater control over their child’s social media usage.
To further ensure the integrity of Teen Accounts, Instagram is implementing stricter age verification measures. Teens attempting to create accounts with an adult birthday will be required to verify their age by uploading an ID or taking a selfie video. The platform is also enhancing its ability to detect and reclassify accounts that falsely claim to belong to teens, ensuring that all young users benefit from the new protections. Instagram employs various methods to identify these accounts, including analyzing birthday-related posts and receiving reports from other users, thereby maintaining the effectiveness of the Teen Accounts system.
As part of the Teen Account rollout, younger users will gain access to a new feature that allows them to select topics they want to see more of on their Explore page and in recommendations. Options include Soccer, Crafts, Dance, Music & Audio, Cats, Food & Drink, and Computer Science, among others. This feature is designed to help teens focus on more positive and relevant content, enhancing their overall experience on the platform. Parents will have visibility into the topics their child has chosen, allowing them to better understand their interests and guide their content consumption. However, Instagram acknowledges that algorithms may still drive users to topics outside their selections if the app detects higher engagement with other content.
The rollout of Teen Accounts will begin immediately for new sign-ups, with all existing teen accounts transitioning within the next 60 days in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia. Later this year, the feature will extend to teens in the European Union, followed by a global rollout in January. This phased approach ensures that Instagram can manage the transition smoothly and address any issues that arise during the initial implementation phase.
Despite these advancements, challenges remain. Some teens may attempt to lie about their age when signing up for Instagram, which is why Meta is enhancing its age verification processes. By requiring additional verification steps for accounts flagged as potentially fraudulent, Instagram aims to uphold the integrity of the Teen Accounts system and ensure that protections are effectively applied to all eligible users.
