Meta Ends Creator Bonus Program on Threads as Strategy Remains Unclear

Meta has officially pulled the plug on its Threads bonus program, a quiet move that has left creators puzzled about the platform’s future. The incentive program, which previously paid select creators between $500 and $5,000 per month based on performance metrics like post views and activity, was quietly discontinued earlier this year. Multiple creators have confirmed their payments stopped around the end of April, approximately one year after the bonuses began.

Though Meta hasn’t offered a public explanation, evidence of the program’s termination can be seen in the removal of Threads from the Instagram support page that once outlined creator incentives. The silence surrounding the decision has sparked concern and speculation among those who relied on the bonuses as a meaningful source of income or motivation to stay active on the platform.

Threads, which launched as Meta’s answer to X (formerly Twitter), is still growing its user base and seeking to attract brands and influencers. While Meta has rolled out several creator-friendly features—including more links in bios and enhanced analytics—it’s unclear what the platform offers in terms of direct value to creators moving forward. Posts on Threads can go viral, thanks to the app’s algorithmic timeline, but creators say that doesn’t necessarily translate into follower growth or traffic to external sites.

Meta may believe Threads has gained enough organic traction to maintain momentum without financially incentivizing creators. But that calculation could backfire. Without clear monetization opportunities or growth strategies, Threads risks losing the very creators who could help it scale into the billion-user platform Mark Zuckerberg envisions.

As Threads evolves, creators and marketers alike are waiting for Meta to define a sustainable path for community growth and content value. Until then, the platform’s future as a meaningful space for influencers remains uncertain.
