Elon Musk says the newest version of his AI assistant is ready for everyone. On Tuesday he said SpaceXAI, the AI division formed when SpaceX absorbed xAI, will release Grok 4.5 to the public on Thursday, July 9, after roughly two weeks of testing. Musk said positive feedback from beta users drove the decision to move up the timeline and open the model to anyone.
The headline claim is about class. Musk describes Grok 4.5 as an “Opus class” model, saying it comes close to and perhaps exceeds Anthropic’s Claude Opus, the strongest generally available model from that company. Some coverage framed the comparison against the specific Claude Opus 4.8 release, though Musk’s own wording pointed at Opus in general rather than a version number. He also claims Grok 4.5 runs faster, uses fewer tokens, and costs less to operate. Those are xAI’s own claims, not results from any independent benchmark, and no third party has yet published side by side testing to check them. For now the comparison rests on Musk’s word and on the beta feedback he cited.
Under the name sits a larger model than the one powering today’s public Grok. Grok 4.5 is built on xAI’s V9 foundation, which the company puts at roughly 1.5 trillion parameters, several times the size of the architecture behind the current public release. On top of that base, xAI added a supplemental training stage using coding data from Cursor, the AI assisted programming tool that SpaceXAI acquired. Feeding Cursor’s developer data into the model is meant to sharpen its performance on software tasks, the kind of work where a faster and cheaper Opus class model would find eager buyers among engineers.
The model has been in front of real users for about two weeks. Grok 4.5 entered private beta at SpaceX and Tesla on June 28, giving Musk’s own companies first access before any public launch. Running it inside SpaceX and Tesla let xAI collect feedback from working engineers on live tasks rather than test prompts, and Musk pointed to that response as the reason the public release is arriving so quickly. Two weeks from internal beta to public availability is an aggressive schedule for a frontier model, and it fits the faster release cadence Musk has been signaling for the merged company.
Timing turns the launch into a contest. The same Thursday that Grok 4.5 opens to the public, OpenAI is set to broadly launch GPT-5.6, putting the two labs on the same calendar day. That makes July 9 a head to head AI launch day, with Musk and OpenAI each asking users and developers to judge a new flagship at the same moment. The overlap is unlikely to be an accident given how closely the companies track each other, and it hands the day a scoreboard quality that neither lab is trying to downplay. Whoever wins early attention and early benchmarks stands to shape which model developers reach for first.
The Cursor connection points back to how SpaceXAI is trying to build an edge. By buying Cursor and folding its coding data into Grok 4.5’s training, the company is turning a popular developer tool into a source of training signal for its own model, a loop that could keep improving Grok’s coding ability as more engineers use it. It also raises the competitive stakes with rivals whose models developers currently prefer for programming, since a cheaper and faster Opus class model aimed squarely at coding would pressure both pricing and loyalty across the market.
What remains untested is whether the claims hold up once the model is in the open. Musk has a record of describing his products in superlatives ahead of release, and an Opus class label means little until independent testers can run Grok 4.5 against Claude Opus 4.8 on shared benchmarks and confirm the speed, cost, and token efficiency he is promising. The public release on Thursday is the moment that testing can begin, alongside a direct comparison with GPT-5.6 landing the same day. For a company that has spent the past year consolidating rockets, satellites, and AI under one roof, the Grok 4.5 launch is the first big test of whether the merged operation can ship a frontier model that lives up to the way its owner talks about it.
