NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft has successfully completed its mission to collect samples from asteroid Bennu, a 4.5-billion-year-old space rock, and is set to bring them back to Earth. Journey to Bennu:
Launched on September 8, 2016, OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer) embarked on a seven-year, 1.2-billion-mile journey to Bennu, reaching the asteroid on December 3, 2018. The spacecraft made a brief yet dramatic touchdown on October 20, 2020, to collect samples before beginning its return journey on May 10, 2021.
The Importance of Bennu:
Bennu, discovered in 1999, is a near-Earth object, passing relatively close to our planet every six years. It is rich in carbon-based material, potentially holding clues to the early solar system and the origins of life. Studying Bennu helps scientists understand the composition of asteroids that could impact Earth and provides insights into developing preventative measures against asteroid collisions.
Mission Achievements:
OSIRIS-REx successfully collected samples, surpassing its primary goal of acquiring at least 2 ounces (60 grams) of asteroid material. The spacecraft used innovative instruments like the OSIRIS-REx Camera Suite (OCAMS) and the OSIRIS-REx Laser Altimeter (OLA) to study, map, and analyze Bennu in unprecedented detail, providing invaluable data to create highly accurate 3D models of the asteroid’s surface.
Return and Future Endeavors:
The sample return capsule is expected to land in Utah’s West Desert on September 24, 2023, where scientists will eagerly retrieve it for study. After delivering the samples, OSIRIS-REx will continue its mission to study another near-Earth asteroid, Apophis, expected to closely approach Earth in 2029. The spacecraft will be renamed OSIRIS-APEX (OSIRIS-APophis Explorer) for this extended mission.
