The Hubble Space Telescope has captured an extraordinary image of the galaxy LEDA 857074, located in the constellation Eridanus. This galaxy, a barred spiral with partially broken arms, was thrust into the spotlight due to a supernova named SN 2022ADQZ, which shines brightly at the galaxy’s core. While Hubble has observed a wide range of well-known celestial objects—from the Crab Nebula to Omega Centauri—LEDA 857074 was an obscure galaxy, scarcely mentioned in scientific literature.

LEDA 857074 had virtually no data recorded about it since its discovery, making it a relatively unknown entity in the vast catalog of the universe’s galaxies. However, the discovery of SN 2022ADQZ in late 2022 by an automated survey changed that. The supernova’s appearance prompted astronomers to direct Hubble’s powerful gaze toward the galaxy in early 2023, capturing the stunning image now shared with the world.

Supernovae are rare events, and the chance of one occurring in any particular galaxy is slim. The occurrence of SN 2022ADQZ in LEDA 857074 was a fortunate event, as it provided the opportunity to study this otherwise overlooked galaxy. The resulting image from Hubble not only showcases the beauty of the supernova but also adds LEDA 857074 to the ranks of more famous celestial objects with a dedicated Hubble photograph.

This serendipitous observation highlights the ongoing value of the Hubble Space Telescope in uncovering the mysteries of the universe, bringing attention to lesser-known galaxies, and expanding our understanding of the cosmos.
