In a brazen overnight operation, thieves have stolen a truck near London’s Heathrow Airport carrying a massive shipment of new Samsung electronics, valued at over $9.6 million USD. The heist, which included 5,000 units of the recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 smartphones, highlights a growing trend of sophisticated, organized crime targeting high-value technology shipments just as they hit the market.

According to reports from Yonhap News TV, the truck contained a total of 12,000 Samsung devices. The most valuable part of the haul consisted of 5,000 of Samsung’s flagship foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, which are estimated to be worth around £8 million alone. The shipment also included 5,000 brand-new Galaxy Watch 8 models, as well as older stock from the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy A16 series. It is believed the truck was stolen from a warehouse after the cargo had been processed and moved from the airport.

The total value of the stolen cargo is reported to be 13.3 billion Korean won, which translates to approximately $9.6 million USD (around $14.7 million AUD). While the figures are staggering, Samsung is not expected to suffer a direct financial loss as the entire shipment was insured. British police have launched a full investigation into the incident and have reportedly located the stolen container, though it is currently unclear if any of the Samsung products have been recovered.

While a significant criminal event, the heist is being viewed by some as a backhanded testament to the new devices’ popularity. The targeted theft occurred just weeks after the Galaxy Z7 series broke pre-order records for foldable devices in key markets including the US, India, and South Korea. This high demand makes the phones a lucrative target for thieves, who can quickly move the products on the black market.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the immense logistical and security challenges involved in managing global supply chains for high-demand consumer electronics. Although insurance mitigates the financial blow, the focus for authorities will now be on tracking the stolen goods and dismantling the criminal network responsible, while Samsung works to ensure its supply lines remain secure against future attacks.
