xAI Rebrands as SpaceXAI, Folding Musk’s AI Into His Rocket Company

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company no longer has a name of its own. On Monday the account formerly known as xAI posted a short video of its old logo folding into a new one, along with a three word caption that made the change official: we are now SpaceXAI. The rebrand completes a merger Musk struck in February, when SpaceX absorbed xAI in an all stock deal that valued the combined company at 1.25 trillion dollars, the largest corporate merger in history.

Under the February agreement, reported by CNBC, SpaceX was valued at 1 trillion dollars and xAI at 250 billion, and the two were combined into a single entity. Musk framed it as building the most ambitious vertically integrated innovation engine on and off Earth, joining AI, rockets, and space based internet under one roof. By May he had gone further, saying xAI would stop existing as a separate company and that Grok, its chatbot, along with the X platform, would become the AI division of SpaceX. Michael Nicolls, a Starlink vice president, was named to run it.

The July rebrand is the public face catching up to that corporate reality. The new SpaceXAI logo keeps the stylized X that xAI and the X social platform already share and works it into SpaceX’s own identity, a small design change carrying a large message: AI is now a core pillar of SpaceX rather than a sibling company parked next to it. The SpaceXAI handle, an updated website, and refreshed branding across products arrived together.

What sits under the new name is substantial. SpaceXAI keeps building Grok, now paired with tools for reasoning, image and video generation, an encyclopedia it calls Grokipedia, and developer APIs. Its compute backbone is Colossus, the Memphis supercomputer that xAI assembled with more than 200,000 Nvidia GPUs, among the largest AI training clusters anywhere. The rebrand also landed with a product push, including 21 new flagship voices for Grok’s voice assistant, all of them multilingual across more than 25 languages, a reminder that the AI work is continuing at full speed even as the corporate wrapper changes.

The reason to fuse an AI company into a rocket company becomes clearer at the edge of the plan. SpaceX has been open about wanting to build data centers in orbit, where nearly constant solar power and the cold of space could sidestep the electricity and cooling limits that increasingly bottleneck AI on the ground. Reporting from Barron’s and others points to a Starmind satellite effort tied to those orbital data centers, and SpaceX has filed with the Federal Communications Commission for satellites designed to act as compute nodes, with Starship as the vehicle meant to haul that capacity up. Training and running large models in space remains years away and far from proven, but it explains why Musk keeps insisting that AI and spaceflight belong inside the same company.

Consolidation on this scale carries obvious risks. Pouring xAI, X, Starlink, and SpaceX into one private colossus concentrates enormous power over rocket launch, satellite internet, a major social network, and a frontier AI lab in a single company controlled by one person, a structure that regulators and competitors are certain to scrutinize. The merger also ties the fortunes of a young and speculative AI business to the cash flows of a rocket and internet operation that already earns real money, a link that could steady the AI bets or drag on the whole depending on how they pay off.

For now the change is mostly one of identity. Grok still answers questions, Starlink still beams internet, and Starship still flies. But the SpaceXAI name makes explicit what Musk has spent the past year assembling, a bet that the next phase of both artificial intelligence and spaceflight will be built by the same company, and increasingly, in the same place, which is orbit.
