Apple has a new champion chip. The company unveiled the M5 Ultra, which Apple calls its “most powerful chip ever,” and it matters because it is aimed squarely at the heaviest professional work, the complex 3D rendering, visual effects, scientific analysis, and frontier AI models that most computers can only run by reaching out to a data center.
The way Apple built it is the interesting part, because rather than design one enormous chip, it used a technology it calls UltraFusion to fuse two of its dual die M5 Max chips into a single quad die processor, a first for Apple silicon. That link carries data between the dies at more than 4.4 terabytes per second, fast enough that the four pieces behave as one unified chip rather than a committee of four, which is the hard problem in stitching processors together.
The raw numbers are built for people whose time is measured in render queues, since the M5 Ultra offers up to a 36 core processor that Apple says runs multithreaded work up to 1.3 times faster than the previous M3 Ultra, paired with an up to 80 core graphics engine that it bills as the most powerful in any Apple chip. On AI tasks specifically the company claims up to 4.3 times the peak compute of the M3 Ultra, the kind of jump that turns an overnight job into an afternoon one.
For anyone working with large AI models the memory may matter even more than the cores, because the M5 Ultra can be fitted with up to 512GB of memory feeding the processor at up to 1.2 terabytes per second, enough headroom to hold and run models with hundreds of billions of parameters entirely on the machine. Running a frontier model locally rather than sending data to the cloud is faster for tight editing loops and keeps sensitive work off the internet, which is exactly the appeal for studios and research labs.
The chip ships inside a new Mac Studio, announced alongside the M6 that goes into smaller Macs, and it slots into Apple’s long running strategy of designing its own silicon to squeeze more performance out of every watt. It is worth noting that every speed figure here comes from Apple and is measured against its own earlier chips rather than a rival’s, so the honest read is that this is a large generational step for professional Macs rather than an independently verified crown. Even so, a desktop that can run hundreds of billions of parameters without touching a server is a genuine shift in what a single machine on a desk can do, and it is the clearest sign yet of how much Apple wants that heavy AI work happening on device.
