Amazon has significantly expanded its global cloud infrastructure with the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region, marking one of its largest single-market investments with over $5 billion committed to building and operating data centers in Taiwan. The new region features three fully independent Availability Zones—each with separate power, cooling, and security systems—bringing AWS’s global footprint to 117 zones across 37 regions worldwide.
This strategic expansion addresses two critical needs for Taiwan’s tech-driven economy: performance optimization through localized infrastructure and compliance with Taiwan’s stringent data sovereignty laws. By processing and storing data within Taiwan’s borders, organizations can now leverage AWS’s full suite of 200+ cloud services while adhering to regulations like the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). The ultra-low-latency network between availability zones enables businesses to build fault-tolerant applications with synchronous replication for mission-critical workloads.
The launch has already attracted major local partners, most notably TSMC, which has established a Cloud Alliance partnership with AWS through its Open Innovation Platform (OIP). This collaboration provides semiconductor designers with a TSMC-certified virtual design environment (VDE) on AWS, accelerating chip development for advanced nodes like N2 and N3 processes. During the AWS Summit Taipei, TSMC’s ecosystem lead Dan Kochpatcharin demonstrated how the partnership helps customers optimize cloud resources for complex EDA workflows.
The infrastructure arrives as Taiwanese enterprises across finance, healthcare, and government face growing pressure to modernize while maintaining data residency. AWS offers multiple compliance solutions including Outposts for hybrid deployments, featuring military-grade security measures like tamper-evident hardware and default encryption. Early adopters include cybersecurity firm Trend Micro and PC manufacturer Acer, who can now balance global scalability with local regulatory requirements.
With this investment, AWS strengthens Taiwan’s position in the global tech supply chain while providing the infrastructure needed for next-generation applications in AI, IoT, and high-performance computing—all anchored within the island’s legal jurisdiction. The move also signals Amazon’s long-term commitment to Taiwan’s digital economy as competition intensifies among cloud providers in Asia’s semiconductor heartland.
