Apple seems to have spoiled one of its own surprises, leaving a video of camera equipped AirPods buried inside a software update. The clip, spotted in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate, shows a wearer asking Siri to remember a book they are looking at, and it matters because it is the clearest sign yet that Apple plans to put cameras in earbuds, turning a device most people think of as purely for sound into something that can also see.
The pitch, as the leaked demo frames it, is not photography but memory, with Siri’s voiceover promising that “With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable” before inviting the wearer to ask it to save anything they like. The camera is said to feed low resolution imagery to Apple’s long delayed AI powered Siri, which can then identify what is in view and answer questions about the wearer’s surroundings, a role closer to a quiet assistant than to a camera you point and shoot.
Physically the earbuds look familiar, resembling the current AirPods Pro closely enough that the giveaway is a slightly thicker stem, which is presumably where the camera and its extra components live. The software even accounts for the awkward realities of a camera you wear in your ear, since the leak shows an alert that warns users when hair is covering the AirPods and asks them to keep the lens clear to get accurate information about their environment.
There are firmer breadcrumbs about timing than usual for a leak, because code in the release candidate references a product identifier, B790, described as AirPods with cameras expected later in 2026, and the presence of a polished demo inside a near final software build strongly suggests these are close. The natural stage would be Apple’s iPhone 18 event next month, the same window where the company is expected to show much of its new hardware, though Apple has confirmed none of this.
The strategic contrast worth noting is with Meta, whose Ray-Ban glasses put a camera on your face mainly to capture photos and video, whereas Apple appears to be positioning earbud cameras as AI sensors, a way to feed Siri context without asking people to hold up a phone or wear a camera where everyone can see it. That framing may soften some of the privacy questions that dog camera wearables, but it does not erase them, since an always ready camera in someone’s ear raises the same discomfort as one on a pair of glasses. If the leak holds, Apple is about to enter that debate from an unexpected direction, and the earbuds so many people already wear will quietly gain the ability to look around.
