
A historic private spaceflight has concluded successfully, as astronauts from India, Poland, and Hungary returned to Earth after nearly three weeks aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Their SpaceX capsule safely parachuted into the Pacific Ocean off the Southern California coast, marking a triumphant close to a landmark journey.
Chartered by the Houston-based company Axiom Space, the mission was commanded by Peggy Whitson, America’s most experienced astronaut. Whitson was joined by Shubhanshu Shukla from India, Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland, and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. Each of these countries invested more than $65 million to place their representatives aboard this historic flight.
“Thanks for the great ride and safe trip,” Whitson radioed shortly after the capsule touched the water, signaling the mission’s successful conclusion.
This spaceflight was particularly significant for India, Poland, and Hungary, each of which had not seen their citizens journey into space for over four decades. Their last space travelers had launched with Soviet missions during the late 1970s and 1980s. Onboard the ISS, the visiting astronauts not only conducted dozens of important scientific experiments but also proudly celebrated their national heritage in orbit.
This mission marked Axiom Space’s fourth visit to the ISS since 2022, highlighting NASA’s ongoing initiative to open the doors of space exploration to private industry and international cooperation. With NASA planning to retire the current space station by 2030, Axiom is among several companies working to build commercial space stations, aiming to ensure a continuous human presence in orbit beyond NASA’s tenure at the ISS.
