Chandrayaan-3: A Historic Leap and a Hopeful Awakening on the Lunar South Pole

In a historic venture that has placed India in the elite club of nations capable of a soft landing on the Moon, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has recently updated the world on the Chandrayaan-3 mission. As the lunar night approaches, the Vikram lander and the Pragyaan rover have been put into “sleep mode”, with hopes of reawakening with the next lunar day around September 22. Here’s a detailed look into this monumental mission and what lies ahead.

A Historic Touchdown

On August 23, India marked its presence on the Moon’s scarcely explored south pole, becoming the first country to achieve this feat. The Vikram lander, which houses the Pragyaan rover, successfully touched down, joining the ranks of the US, the former Soviet Union, and China in achieving a soft landing on the Moon. This significant milestone has been a source of regular updates from ISRO, sharing the lander and rover’s movements, findings, and captivating images captured during their journey.

A Successful Hop and a Hopeful Future

In a recent update, ISRO revealed that the Vikram lander had successfully conducted a “hop experiment”, rising about 40 cm and landing at a distance of 30-40 cm. This experiment indicates the potential for the spacecraft to be utilized in future missions, possibly bringing samples back to Earth or even facilitating human missions. The Chandrayaan-3’s landing was meticulously timed to coincide with the onset of a lunar day, equivalent to just over four weeks on Earth, allowing the lander and the rover approximately 14 days of sunlight to charge their batteries and function optimally.

Preparing for the Lunar Night

As the lunar night approaches, a period also spanning about two weeks on Earth, the lander and the rover have been prepared to endure the darkness. Both have completed their assignments and are now fully charged, with all scientific instruments turned off, awaiting the dawn of a new lunar day. Former ISRO chief Kiran Kumar conveyed to the BBC that the rover, being smaller, might face challenges due to the extended shadows in the south pole region, potentially placing it in a dark area.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding their reawakening, given the extreme temperatures that can plummet to -200C to -250C, there is a glimmer of hope. The solar panels have been oriented to absorb radiation and generate power with the next sunrise, potentially bringing the system back to life for another set of assignments.

As the world watches with bated breath, ISRO maintains a hopeful yet realistic outlook, stating, “Else, it will forever stay there as India’s lunar ambassador.”
