Chinese Humanoid Robot STAR1 Sets New Speed Record at 8 mph with AI-Powered Enhancements

Scientists have unveiled a groundbreaking achievement in humanoid robotics with the demonstration of STAR1, a new bipedal robot capable of reaching speeds just over 8 miles per hour (mph), equivalent to 3.6 meters per second (m/s). Developed by the Chinese company Robot Era, STAR1 stands as the fastest humanoid robot of its kind to date, although this impressive speed was achieved with the assistance of specialized footwear.

Standing at 5 feet 7 inches (171 centimeters) tall and weighing 143 pounds (65 kilograms), STAR1 showcases advanced engineering and artificial intelligence (AI) integration. In a recent promotional video, Robot Era showcased STAR1’s capabilities by pitting two of its robots against each other in the challenging terrain of the Gobi Desert in northwestern China. One of the robots was outfitted with a pair of sneakers to test the impact of footwear on its running performance. The AI-enhanced STAR1 successfully navigated diverse landscapes, including grasslands, gravel paths, paved roads, and earthy trails, maintaining its top speed consistently for an impressive 34 minutes.

This achievement marks a significant milestone, surpassing the previous speed record held by Unitree’s H1 robot, which reached 7.4 mph (3.3 m/s) in March 2024. While STAR1 benefited from added footwear, enhancing its running efficiency, Unitree’s H1 did not achieve true jogging or running motions, as its feet did not fully leave the ground during movement. This distinction highlights STAR1’s superior agility and dynamic performance in controlled environments.

A key factor contributing to STAR1’s performance is its powerful AI hardware, boasting a processing capability of 275 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This far exceeds the AI processing power found in many high-end laptops, which typically range between 45 and 55 TOPS. Additionally, STAR1 is equipped with 12 degrees of freedom, allowing for a wide range of movements and increased flexibility. These specifications enable the robot to perform complex tasks with precision and adaptability, making it a versatile tool for various applications.

The demonstration of STAR1 is part of a broader trend in the development of humanoid robots, with companies worldwide pushing the boundaries of what these machines can achieve. Notable examples include Tesla’s Optimus Gen-2, the AI-powered Figure 01 robot, and Boston Dynamics’ latest iteration of the Atlas robot. These advancements reflect the rapid progress in robotics and AI, aiming to create machines that can assist in everyday tasks, perform specialized functions, and explore environments that are challenging for humans.

Despite the remarkable capabilities of STAR1, the use of footwear to achieve peak speeds raises questions about the future of humanoid robot design and the extent to which external aids will be necessary to enhance performance.
