A Chinese rocket stage that broke apart in space this week has created a significant cloud of debris, endangering over 1,000 satellites and other objects in Earth’s orbit. The rocket, which was launched by China’s state-owned Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology (SSST) to deploy 18 internet satellites, reportedly exploded shortly after completing its mission, leading to the release of more than 700 pieces of debris.
The event has raised concerns among space analysts and tracking firms, who estimate that the number of debris pieces could exceed 900, making it one of the largest debris-generating events in recent history. The debris was created at an altitude of approximately 800 kilometers (497 miles), a high-traffic region of Earth’s orbit where numerous satellites operate.

The cause of the rocket stage’s breakup remains unclear. It is uncertain whether it was triggered by a collision with another object or by an onboard explosion of unused rocket fuel. The U.S. Space Command initially reported 300 pieces of debris but acknowledged that this number would likely increase as the debris cloud spreads.
The growing debris field poses a significant risk to over 1,100 objects in space, according to Audrey Schaffer, vice president of strategy at space-tracking firm Slingshot Aerospace. Of these objects, roughly one-third are active spacecraft that may be able to maneuver out of harm’s way. However, the remaining objects, which are uncontrollable pieces of space junk, have no means of avoiding the debris, raising fears of potential cascading collisions.
This is not the first time a Chinese rocket stage has broken apart in orbit. In 2022, a similar incident involving a Long March 6A rocket led to the creation of hundreds of pieces of debris, drawing criticism from Western countries and space sustainability advocates. The recurrence of such events has sparked calls for better control and disposal practices for spent rocket bodies.
The latest debris cloud is expected to persist in orbit for several years, adding to the growing problem of space junk that threatens the safety and sustainability of Earth’s orbital environment.
