Elon Musk announced on Wednesday that X, formerly known as Twitter, is rolling out a new feature called “private likes” to enhance user privacy. This update will hide all user likes by default and is expected to start appearing on timelines immediately.
The introduction of private likes means users’ likes on the platform will no longer be visible to others. Musk explained that this change aims to allow people to like content without the fear of judgment or backlash. “It is important to allow people to like posts without getting attacked for doing so,” Musk stated.
Haofei Wang, X’s director of engineering, had hinted at this change last month, emphasizing its importance in protecting users’ public image. “Public likes are incentivizing the wrong behaviour,” Wang posted on X. He highlighted that many users hesitate to like content that might be considered controversial or edgy because they fear backlash from trolls or are concerned about maintaining a certain public image.
Wang also mentioned that liking more posts helps improve users’ personalized ‘For you’ algorithm on the platform, encouraging more relevant content in their feeds. With the new private likes feature, a like will be visible only to the user and the content author. “The author will be notified, but not anyone else. The bookmark is only visible to you. We could even make it customizable for users,” Wang noted.
This update aims to create a safer and more private experience for users, encouraging more authentic engagement with content on X. By shielding users’ likes from public view, the platform hopes to foster a more open and genuine interaction environment.
Overall, the private likes feature represents a significant shift in how social media platforms address user privacy concerns and manage public engagement. As X continues to evolve under Musk’s leadership, it remains to be seen how this and other features will shape the future of online social interactions.
