Elon Musk has officially launched “Macrohard,” a new artificial intelligence company under his xAI initiative aimed squarely at software giant Microsoft. Musk announced the new venture on X (formerly Twitter) on August 22, confirming the project’s ambitious goals. “It’s a tongue-in-cheek name, but the project is very real!” he wrote.
The vision for Macrohard is as audacious as its name. Musk explained that the company aims to use AI to simulate an entire software company from the ground up. “In principle, given that software companies like Microsoft do not themselves manufacture any physical hardware, it should be possible to simulate them entirely with AI,” he stated. This builds on his earlier plans for a “multi-agent AI software company” powered by xAI’s Grok chatbot, where hundreds of specialized AI agents for coding, design, and analysis would work together in virtual machines to create and refine software.
This launch is the culmination of years of public jabs and strategic planning. Musk, who has a history of posting “Macrohard >> Microsoft” on social media, first filed a trademark for the name on August 1.7 The application outlines a broad range of AI-driven products, including software for artificial speech and text production and advanced chatbots. His move aligns with his broader vision of his companies, particularly Tesla, as “AI robotics” ventures rather than just car manufacturers.
Underpinning this ambitious project is an immense investment in computing power. Macrohard is closely tied to xAI’s Colossus 2 supercomputer initiative in Memphis, one of the most powerful supercomputing clusters in the world. Musk has confirmed plans to acquire millions of Nvidia GPUs to further scale the project, placing him in a direct “AI arms race” for computing capacity with rivals like OpenAI and Meta.
Macrohard now officially joins Elon Musk’s expanding portfolio of future-focused companies, including Tesla, xAI, X Corp, SpaceX, The Boring Company, and Neuralink. While the name may be provocative, the serious intent and massive technical infrastructure behind it signal the arrival of a formidable new player in the artificial intelligence landscape, one with the explicit goal of challenging the very foundations of the software industry.
