Google’s Gemini AI is now available on the Pixel Tablet for those who have installed the “app,” bringing a new dimension to the device’s capabilities while maintaining some familiar Google Assistant functions. Although the official Gemini listing on the Play Store, identified as com.google.android.apps.bard, does not yet support the Pixel Tablet, users can sideload a homescreen shortcut to access Gemini.

Once sideloaded, users can proceed through a setup process tailored specifically for the Pixel Tablet. The user interface is identical to the one found on the inner screen of the Pixel Fold, albeit not optimized for the wider screens of the Pixel Tablet. Fortunately, the Gemini panel is centered for a more balanced display.

Despite the introduction of Gemini, Google Assistant remains active in Hub Mode on the Pixel Tablet. When the tablet is placed on its Charging Speaker Dock, invoking “Hey Google” will trigger the traditional Assistant experience rather than Gemini. This continuity ensures that users can still rely on Google Assistant for smart home commands and other functions until Gemini is fully integrated with Google Home controls and lockscreen access.

Google announced the integration of Gemini with the Pixel Tablet during the launch of Circle to Search in May, signaling an ongoing evolution of the device’s AI capabilities.
