Google has officially confirmed in a teaser video that its upcoming line of smartphones will include a new foldable model, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The company described the Pixel 9 Pro Fold as a “foldable phone built for the Gemini era” in its promotional tweet, highlighting its integration with Google’s generative AI chatbot.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold shares some design elements with the non-foldable Pixel 9 Pro, such as a prominent camera bump. The lenses are arranged vertically near one side of the phone, ensuring that the camera bump does not take up the entire width of the folded device. While Google has yet to formally unveil the model, a previous leak from Android Authority has already revealed many details about the upcoming Pixel 9 models.
According to the leak, Taiwan’s National Communications Commission (NCC) uploaded galleries of each phone—Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold—to its archives. Some of these photos feature the Pixel 9 Pro Fold in its unfolded state, showing how Google has moved its selfie camera to the inside screen for a wider field of view. The photos also reveal a reduced fold crease on the display, which measures 250mm or just under 10 inches.
The NCC’s leak further revealed that the upcoming devices will require larger chargers, as their charging rates are generally faster than those of previous models based on the agency’s tests. However, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold was noted to have the slowest charging rate among the new models. These details will be confirmed when Google officially launches its new smartphones at the next Made by Google event on August 13.
This new foldable model is expected to bring a fresh experience to users, combining the advanced features of the Pixel series with the flexibility of a foldable design. The integration of the generative AI chatbot is anticipated to enhance the user experience by providing smarter and more intuitive interactions.
