Greenland, often pictured as a vast white ice landscape, is undergoing a dramatic transformation due to global warming, becoming greener for the first time in thousands of years. This change, highlighted in recent studies, reveals an alarming trend of ice melt and the consequential expansion of vegetation across the region.
Over the past three decades, Greenland’s ice sheet and glaciers have seen a significant reduction, with an estimated 11,000 square miles of ice melted—comparable to nine times the size of Rhode Island. This melting has not only decreased the ice cover but also resulted in a doubling of the total area covered by vegetation and a quadrupling in wetlands coverage. Such drastic changes have been termed “shrubification” by scientists, indicating a shift towards a greener landscape in areas previously dominated by ice.
The Arctic, particularly Greenland, is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world, with air temperatures experiencing a notable rise. This accelerated warming has led to more extreme temperatures and precipitation, reducing Greenland’s climate resilience and triggering non-linear land-climate system feedbacks. These feedbacks include soil development and vegetation change, alterations in land surface albedo, and permafrost degradation, all contributing to further ice loss and greening of Greenland.

The greening of Greenland carries significant implications beyond the visual transformation. It affects the overall temperature of the land, as snow and ice, which reflect sunlight, are replaced by bedrock and vegetation that absorb the sun’s energy, thereby increasing land surface temperatures and contributing to global warming. Additionally, the expansion of wetlands is noteworthy for their role in releasing methane, a potent greenhouse gas, further exacerbating climate change effects.
This transformation also poses challenges for indigenous populations that rely on the ecosystems for traditional hunting practices, highlighting the broader cultural consequences of Greenland’s changing landscape.
