In a world that is increasingly reliant on digital platforms, the safety of personal data is paramount. The Indian government has recently issued a stern warning to its citizens regarding a sophisticated malware campaign targeting Android users, primarily in India. This malware, known as DogeRAT, is capable of accessing sensitive data and granting hackers control over infected devices.
A Sophisticated Malware Campaign
The Controller General of Defence Accounts, a department under India’s Defence Ministry, has released an advisory concerning the Remote Access Trojan called DogeRAT. This malware is distributed through social media and messaging platforms disguised as legitimate apps such as ChatGPT, Opera Mini, and even premium versions of popular platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and Instagram.
Once installed on a device, DogeRAT gains unauthorized access to sensitive data including contacts, messages, and banking credentials. It can commandeer infected devices, allowing hackers to send spam, initiate unauthorized payments, alter files, and even capture photos and keystrokes. Moreover, it can track the user’s location and record audio.
A Call for Vigilance
While the origin of this threat remains unknown, the advisory highlights a recent incident where cybercriminals used Telegram to disseminate fake versions of popular apps. The Defence Ministry has urged departments and officials to refrain from downloading apps from unverified third-party platforms and clicking on links from unknown senders. They are also advised to keep smartphones updated with the latest software and security patches and to install an antivirus app.
A Surge in Cybersecurity Breaches
India has witnessed a significant increase in cybersecurity breaches with the rise in digitization. Now the world’s second-largest internet market after China, the country reported a 171% increase in cybersecurity incidents affecting government departments from 2018 to 2022. Notably, last year, a significant cybersecurity incident targeted the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, affecting servers containing a total of 1.3 terabytes of data.
A Global Concern
According to cybersecurity startup CloudSEK, this open-source Android malware, based on Java, initially targeted users in India but intends to have a global reach. The malware campaign could be launched using a Telegram bot and an open-source NodeJS app hosting platform, as demonstrated by the malware’s author on GitHub.
