This successor to the beloved Switch maintains the same modular design philosophy but introduces several notable enhancements. The Switch 2 features a larger screen, although it still sports a significant bezel. The Joy-Con controllers have undergone a significant update, becoming larger with a more rounded design and attaching magnetically to the console’s sides.
The new console adopts a more subdued aesthetic, predominantly black with subtle colorful accents near the controller sticks and on the Joy-Cons, marking a departure from the vibrant palettes of the original models. For players on the go, the Switch 2 boasts a sturdier kickstand and a USB-C port conveniently placed at the top for simultaneous charging and playing.
When docked, the Switch 2 allows for traditional play on the TV, where the Joy-Cons can be used either separately or with a new controller grip. A key feature for existing Switch owners is the backward compatibility; the Switch 2 supports games from the original Switch, both through physical cartridges and digital downloads.
The promotional video tantalizingly showed what appears to be a new or updated Mario Kart game, though it’s unclear if it’s an evolution of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or an entirely new entry. The internal hardware of the Switch 2 is expected to be upgraded, potentially supporting more demanding games, but details on this front are still forthcoming.
As for pricing and availability, Nintendo has yet to release detailed information, promising more insights during a Nintendo Direct livestream set for April 2, 2025. This suggests that the actual release of the Switch 2 could still be some months away. With these enhancements, the Switch 2 looks set to continue Nintendo’s tradition of innovative gaming experiences, keeping the heart of what made the original Switch so popular while stepping into new territory.
