Nvidia, a leading name in the tech industry, is reportedly facing a delay in its highly anticipated Blackwell AI chips, causing some unease among investors who are eagerly awaiting returns on AI investments. Despite this setback, experts suggest that the delay is far from catastrophic for the chip giant.
The tech sector has been experiencing a broad market sell-off, with Nvidia’s potential delay contributing to the downturn. Wall Street Journal tech columnist Dan Gallagher recently discussed the implications of this delay on the program “Asking for a Trend.” He pointed out that the burgeoning field of generative AI was always expected to require significant upfront investment before generating substantial business returns.

“It was always going to take a while for generative AI to build up into some kind of business, if it builds up. But all the investment for it has to come before that. And this is a lot of investment, billions and billions of dollars into buying these GPUs, building these new data centers,” Gallagher explained. He emphasized that periods of heavy spending would inevitably precede any significant revenue from AI ventures.
Gallagher downplayed the impact of the reported delay in Nvidia’s Blackwell chips, citing design and performance issues as the cause. “A three-month delay is hardly fatal,” he noted. “They are ahead of the competition by years. So if it turns out to be like the Blackwell comes out two or three months late, it’s really just kind of shifting a little bit of revenue I think more than anything that’s fatal.” According to Gallagher, Nvidia’s lead in the industry means that even a short delay will not significantly hinder their overall progress.
He added that ambitious goals and rapid development are common in the chip industry, often leading to occasional roadblocks. This perspective suggests that while Nvidia’s delay may cause some short-term financial adjustments, it does not pose a long-term threat to the company’s dominance in the AI chip market.
Nvidia’s substantial lead over its competitors and its reputation for innovation provide a buffer against the potential impacts of this delay. As the AI industry continues to evolve, the investments made now are laying the groundwork for future advancements and revenue streams. Therefore, while delays can be frustrating, they are also a natural part of the high-stakes, fast-paced world of technology development.
