OpenAI says its Codex platform has recorded an astonishing 90 million installs in just seven days, marking one of the fastest adoption surges for an AI productivity tool to date.

According to reports, the figure represents installs during a single week rather than total lifetime downloads. The surge follows the release of GPT-5.5 on April 23, which significantly upgraded Codex’s performance and efficiency.

One of the biggest improvements introduced with GPT 5.5 was a massive expansion of the context window to 400,000 tokens. This allows Codex to process far larger codebases, conversations, and workflows simultaneously. OpenAI also says the model reduces token usage compared to previous versions, making tasks more efficient and lowering operational costs.

The growth also coincides with the launch of Codex for Chrome, a new browser extension that transforms the AI into a live browser based assistant. Instead of remaining isolated inside a coding interface, Codex can now work directly across browser tabs, signed in websites, and development environments.

The extension allows the AI to interact with platforms such as Gmail, LinkedIn, Salesforce, and internal company dashboards using the user’s active browser session. It can also access Chrome DevTools to debug applications, inspect websites, and perform automated testing.

Unlike earlier “computer use” systems that required taking over the user’s screen, the extension operates alongside the user in separate browser tab groups. This makes the experience feel more collaborative and less intrusive.

OpenAI has also expanded Codex beyond pure coding tasks. New automation capabilities allow the system to continue long running work across days or weeks by reusing conversation threads and maintaining context over time.

A memory feature currently in preview enables Codex to retain user preferences, coding conventions, and corrections between sessions. This reduces the need for repeated instructions and moves the platform closer to functioning as a persistent AI assistant rather than a temporary chatbot.

Security is another growing focus. Earlier this year, OpenAI introduced Codex Security, previously known internally as Aardvark. The tool scans repositories for vulnerabilities, generates project specific threat models, and proposes fixes for identified issues.

During beta testing, the system reportedly analyzed more than 1.2 million code commits and uncovered hundreds of critical vulnerabilities along with thousands of high severity issues.

OpenAI president Greg Brockman described GPT 5.5 as a faster and more efficient model built specifically to strengthen agentic coding and computer interaction capabilities.
