Reddit is best known as a wall of text, and it is now testing a way to make you listen to it instead. In a limited experiment across select communities, the company is turning text posts and comments into AI narrated videos and audio. It matters because one of the largest text based sites on the internet is now reworking its core content into the short videos and spoken clips that dominate most feeds.
The mechanism is a new Play mode that sits alongside the familiar text view, so at the top of a post a reader can toggle between Read and Play, with Play turning the thread into a narrated video that Reddit labels “Real conversation voiced by AI.” The feature began rolling out on the web from August 17 before reaching the apps, and importantly the original text threads are left untouched, so the AI version is an alternate way to consume a post rather than a replacement for it.
The logic behind the test is not hard to follow, and Reddit’s own chief executive spelled it out, since Steve Huffman pointed on an earnings call to the whole genre of podcasts and videos elsewhere online that already consist of people reading Reddit threads aloud, and argued that a spoken version of Reddit “can be really engaging.” If audiences are clearly willing to listen to Reddit content, the reasoning goes, Reddit may as well capture that attention on its own platform rather than ceding it to the creators repackaging its posts.
The concerns are as clear as the appeal, and they start with consent, because Reddit is manually selecting which posts get converted and has not said what criteria it uses or whether the people who wrote the posts and comments can opt out of having their words voiced by a machine. There is also the plain matter of accuracy, since AI narration has a habit of mangling the very things that make a community feel like one, mispronouncing usernames, gaming terms, and the in group shorthand that regulars use, which can turn a beloved thread into something that sounds slightly off.
Underneath the specifics sits a larger question the whole industry is circling, about what it means to have AI speak human words at scale and how clearly that should be disclosed, a concern close to the push for marking AI generated content that other companies are now wrestling with. Reddit’s label, that a conversation is voiced by AI, is a start, and the test is small and reversible, but if Play mode grows beyond an experiment it will force the platform to answer harder questions about whose voice, exactly, the audience is hearing.
