SpaceX Completes Historic First Private Spacewalk on Polaris Dawn Mission

In the early hours of Thursday morning, SpaceX successfully completed its first-ever private spacewalk during the Polaris Dawn mission. In a significant milestone for commercial space exploration, Jared Isaacman, the mission commander and billionaire founder of Shift4, and Sarah Gillis, a SpaceX engineer, ventured outside the Dragon capsule “Resilience.” This event marked the first time civilians, rather than government astronauts, have performed an extravehicular activity (EVA), or spacewalk.

The two spacewalkers emerged from the spacecraft and conducted a series of experiments designed to test new technologies and evaluate their mobility in the harsh environment of space. Isaacman reflected on the experience, noting the awe-inspiring view of Earth from space, “Back at home we all have a lot of work to do, but from here, Earth sure looks like a perfect world.”

The spacewalk, lasting about two hours, involved multiple experiments focused on movement and stability in microgravity. Some of the key tests included:

  1. Movement Control Test: The astronauts assessed their ability to control body movement with one hand, holding positions and simulating the use of tools.
  2. Vertical and Horizontal Movement: Isaacman and Gillis used bars to test how effectively they could move in all directions, gauging their reach and mobility.
  3. Foot Restraint Evaluation: They tested how easily they could maneuver within a foot restraint, maintaining positions hands-free or while using tools, and recovering from accidental disengagement of the foot restraint.

These tests provided valuable insights into the design of SpaceX’s newly developed spacesuits, which were created over two years in collaboration with the Polaris Program. The suits are built to withstand the harsh environment of space, and this spacewalk was crucial in testing their effectiveness in preparation for future missions beyond Earth.

The Polaris Dawn mission, which launched on Tuesday, is part of Isaacman’s broader vision for pushing the boundaries of private spaceflight. Alongside the groundbreaking spacewalk, the mission reached an orbit of more than 1,400 kilometers from Earth, the highest altitude humans have reached since the Apollo program.

The mission’s crew, which includes mission specialists Sarah Gillis and medical officer Anna Menon, is performing around 40 science and research experiments. These include tests focused on space technology, human health in microgravity, and long-duration space travel. Additionally, the mission is raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, continuing Isaacman’s philanthropic efforts, which began with his previous spaceflight, the Inspiration4 mission.

SpaceX’s successful spacewalk is a pivotal moment for the commercial space industry, demonstrating the growing capabilities of private companies in space exploration. As companies like SpaceX continue to innovate, this mission represents a step toward SpaceX’s ultimate goal of sending humans to other planets.

Isaacman, who has been a strong advocate for pushing the boundaries of private space travel, views this mission as a symbol of what is possible. “This is the inspiration side of it… anything that’s different than what we’ve seen over the last 20 or 30 years is what gets people excited, thinking: ‘Well if this is what I’m seeing today, I wonder what tomorrow’s gonna look like,’” Isaacman remarked before the mission.

With the successful completion of the first private spacewalk and further scientific discoveries expected from the Polaris Dawn mission, SpaceX continues to blaze a trail for the future of space exploration, bringing us closer to the era of commercial space travel.
