
A new and more powerful cargo freighter is on its way to the International Space Station (ISS) after a successful launch by SpaceX on Sunday evening. A Falcon 9 rocket roared to life from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 6:11 p.m. EDT (which was 7:41 AM Monday, ACST), carrying Northrop Grumman’s brand-new “Cygnus XL” spacecraft on its crucial debut mission.
Designated NG-23, this is the 23rd cargo effort Northrop Grumman has undertaken for NASA, but it marks the first flight for the upgraded Cygnus XL. This larger, more capable version of the veteran freighter represents a significant step up in capacity, hauling an impressive 11,000 pounds (4,990 kg) of supplies, a substantial increase from the 8,500 pounds of the previous model. The launch is a welcome sight for the ISS program, being the first Cygnus flight since August 2024 after the previous mission, NG-22, was unfortunately cancelled due to damage the spacecraft sustained during transport.

Packed within the Cygnus XL is a diverse manifest of science and supplies for the station’s crew. According to NASA, the cargo includes materials to produce semiconductor crystals in the unique microgravity environment, equipment to develop improvements for cryogenic fuel tanks, and a specialized UV light system designed to prevent the growth of microbes in water systems. The spacecraft is also delivering supplies for producing pharmaceutical crystals, which could lead to breakthroughs in treatments for cancer and other diseases.
In a tribute to a fallen hero, Northrop Grumman has named this Cygnus XL the S.S. William “Willie” McCool, in honor of one of the NASA astronauts who tragically died in the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia accident. The spacecraft is scheduled to arrive at the ISS on Wednesday, September 17th, at 6:35 a.m. EDT. Unlike some other vehicles, it will not dock autonomously; instead, it will be skillfully captured by the station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm, with NASA providing a live stream of the event.
The S.S. William “Willie” McCool will remain attached to the orbiting laboratory until March 2026. At the end of its mission, it will depart and, like its predecessors and Russia’s Progress freighter, will be disposed of through a fiery but safe burn-up in Earth’s atmosphere. This disposable model stands in contrast to SpaceX’s own Dragon cargo capsule, which is designed to be recovered from the ocean, refurbished, and flown again on future missions.
