A SpaceX Dragon cargo capsule is en route to the International Space Station (ISS) following a successful pre-dawn launch from Florida on Sunday, carrying over 5,000 pounds of vital supplies, crew equipment, and cutting-edge science experiments. The mission also featured another flawless landing of the Falcon 9 rocket’s first stage, continuing SpaceX’s impressive record of reusability.
The mission, designated CRS-33 for NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services program, lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 2:45 a.m. EDT (4:15 PM ACST) on Sunday, August 24. Approximately eight and a half minutes after launch, the Falcon 9’s first stage booster completed its flight with a precise landing on the drone ship “A Shortfall of Gravitas,” stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. This marked the seventh successful launch and landing for this particular booster.
The Dragon capsule is now on a solo journey to the orbiting laboratory, with its arrival scheduled for Monday, August 25. NASA will begin live coverage of the rendezvous at 6:00 a.m. EDT, with the autonomous docking at the station’s Harmony module expected around 7:30 a.m. EDT (9:00 PM ACST).
Packed inside the Dragon’s pressurized capsule is a host of scientific investigations. These include experiments with bone-forming stem cells to study bone loss prevention, materials to 3D print medical implants for treating nerve damage, bioprinted liver tissue to analyze blood vessel development in microgravity, and supplies to 3D print metal cubes in space.
In addition to its cargo delivery, this Dragon will perform a “reboost demonstration” during its stay. It will fire its thrusters to gently raise the station’s altitude, a crucial task needed to counteract atmospheric drag. These reboosts have historically been performed by Russian Progress spacecraft, and NASA is now tasking its commercial partners with developing this capability to ensure the station’s operational future, which is expected to continue until at least 2030.
The CRS-33 mission is a multi-faceted operation that resupplies the station with critical science, demonstrates the reliability of reusable rockets, and pioneers new capabilities for the ISS. The Dragon is expected to remain docked until December, when it will return to Earth with completed experiments for analysis.
