T-Mobile US Inc and Starlink are teaming up in a bold move that could redefine connectivity in remote areas across the United States. In a major announcement made during the Super Bowl, T-Mobile revealed that it has launched a beta version of Starlink’s satellite internet service. This test phase, available free of charge until July, promises to extend coverage to more than 500,000 square miles—a vast area previously beyond the reach of traditional cell towers.

The new service leverages specially configured Starlink satellites, which are equipped with Direct-to-Cell capabilities to deliver cell phone signals from over 200 miles above the Earth. These satellites, orbiting at speeds over 17,000 miles per hour, automatically connect to a user’s smartphone once it moves out of terrestrial coverage. The process is seamless, with no manual intervention required, ensuring that users remain connected even in areas where conventional networks fall short. While the beta currently supports only text messaging, T-Mobile has assured customers that additional features, including picture messaging, data, and voice calls, will be rolled out in the near future.

Designed to work with most smartphones released in the past four years, the service is not limited by device type or carrier. In fact, it will be available to customers of AT&T and Verizon as well, meaning that no one needs to switch providers to take advantage of this innovative connectivity solution. Beyond everyday communication, T-Mobile plans to use this satellite network to broadcast Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) nationwide, ensuring that vital information reaches users in even the most remote and disaster-prone areas.

Pricing for the service is set to evolve after the beta period. Post-July, T-Mobile Starlink will be included at no extra cost for customers on the Go5G Next and Go5G Next 55+ plans, as well as for business customers on Go5G Business Next and first responder agencies on T-Priority plans. For those on other T-Mobile plans, the service will be available for an additional $15 per month per line. Early adopters who register for the beta by February can secure a discounted rate of $10 per month per line—a 33% reduction—while customers of AT&T and Verizon will face a fee of $20 per month per line once the service fully launches.

This initiative is a significant technical achievement, marking the first space-based mobile network in the US that automatically connects to smartphones, regardless of the carrier. T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert described the service as a “massive technical achievement” and a “game changer for ALL wireless users,” emphasizing that the beta phase is only the beginning of a transformative era for wireless connectivity. The collaboration between T-Mobile and Starlink not only aims to eliminate dead zones but also invites other global carriers—such as KDDI, Telstra, Optus, One NZ, Salt, Entel, Rogers, and Kyivstar—to explore satellite-to-mobile technology partnerships.

By breaking down barriers to connectivity, this pioneering beta test could pave the way for more resilient communication networks in remote regions, during emergencies, and in areas impacted by severe weather or natural disasters. As T-Mobile and Starlink gather feedback from a diverse group of users during the beta phase, the future looks promising for a world where seamless, uninterrupted connectivity is available to everyone, everywhere.
