Tesla has once again pushed the boundaries of robotics with its Optimus humanoid robot, which has now been upgraded with a hand capable of catching tennis balls thrown at high speeds. In a video shared across Tesla’s social media platforms, Optimus displays advanced motor skills by adjusting its hand to successfully catch the balls, followed by a nod of satisfaction, adding an element of personality to the machine.
This upgrade is part of Tesla’s broader plan to deploy pre-production prototypes in its factories by late next year, with commercial units anticipated to be available to other companies by 2026. Optimus is engineered to handle tasks that are typically unsafe, repetitive, or simply boring, aiming to revolutionize work environments.
The robot, standing at 5 feet 8 inches and weighing 125 pounds, is designed with a human-like structure, utilizing materials that ensure both lightness and durability. Its operation is supported by a 2.3 kWh battery managed by Tesla’s proprietary system, allowing for prolonged use tailored to different task intensities.
Optimus features 40 electromechanical actuators that grant it a broad range of motion, from walking at speeds up to 5 mph to handling objects with precision, capable of carrying loads up to 45 pounds. The integration of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology into its AI framework allows for sophisticated environmental interaction, including obstacle avoidance and response to human commands. Its “face” equipped with cameras enhances its ability to recognize objects, map spaces, and perceive depth, crucial for navigating complex environments.
