Huawei is set to potentially make a major leap in smartphone innovation by launching the world’s first trifolding phone next week. A recent leak even showed Huawei’s consumer business group chairman, Richard Yu, holding what appeared to be a trifolding device, fueling speculation.
The timing of Huawei’s event, just hours after Apple’s iPhone 16 reveal, seems strategic. Some analysts believe Huawei is positioning its launch to draw attention away from Apple’s latest lineup, aiming to make a splash in the foldable market. Abhilash Kumar, an analyst at TechInsights, suggested in a post on X that this move was “well-thought-out,” noting that a shorter interval between Huawei’s and Apple’s events could sway some consumers to hold off on purchasing the iPhone 16 in favor of Huawei’s trifolding device.
While Huawei has yet to confirm whether the device will debut outside of China, the launch could still challenge foldable industry leaders like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold. If successful, the trifolding Mate XT could shift the paradigm of smartphone design, offering a fresh take on foldables and reigniting competition in the premium phone market.
