Waymo has officially received the first-ever permit to begin testing its autonomous vehicles on the streets of New York City. The announcement, made by Mayor Eric Adams on Friday, marks the city’s inaugural autonomous vehicle testing program and a significant step for the Alphabet subsidiary as it continues its aggressive national expansion into complex urban environments.
The initial testing phase will see Waymo deploy up to eight of its vehicles in Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn. This first program is set to run through late September, with the potential for an extension. Crucially, in accordance with New York state law, all vehicles will be operated with a trained human safety driver behind the wheel at all times.
“We’re a tech-friendly administration and we’re always looking for innovative ways to safely move our city forward,” Mayor Adams said in a statement. “New York City is proud to welcome Waymo to test this new technology… as we know this testing is only the first step in moving our city further into the 21st century.” This permit is the direct result of a program established by the Adams administration last year to create a framework with strict safety requirements for responsible AV testing.
This move is a key part of Waymo’s broader push into the Northeast market. The company, which surpassed 10 million robotaxi trips nationwide in May, has recently launched services in Austin, expanded in San Francisco, and announced plans for operations in Philadelphia. While Waymo previously conducted manual driving in NYC for data collection in 2021, this new permit allows for true autonomous systems testing for the first time.
Under the terms of the permit, Waymo will operate under strict oversight. The company is required to regularly report data to the city’s Department of Transportation and work in close collaboration with law enforcement and emergency services to ensure the safety and transparency of the program.
The arrival of Waymo’s test vehicles on the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn marks a pivotal moment for both the company and the city.
