In a bold strategic move, Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has unveiled its new flagship 17-series smartphones in Beijing, positioning them as direct competitors to Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17. The lineup, which includes the base Xiaomi 17, the 17 Pro, and the top-tier 17 Pro Max, signals a major offensive in the high-end smartphone arena.
Company founder and CEO Lei Jun made the company’s intentions clear, explaining that skipping the “16-series” was a deliberate decision to underscore Xiaomi’s ambition to go head-to-head with Apple. The new devices are packed with cutting-edge technology to back up that claim.
All three models are the first smartphones in the world to feature the newly announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, and they run on Xiaomi’s proprietary HyperOS 3, which is built on Android 16. The Xiaomi 17 and 17 Pro boast stunning 6.3-inch 2K OLED LTPO displays with remarkably thin 1.18 mm bezels, creating an immersive, nearly edge-to-edge viewing experience.

The camera systems, co-engineered with the legendary German optics company Leica, are a major highlight. Each phone features four 50-megapixel modules, including the front-facing camera, promising exceptional photo quality. The Pro and Pro Max models go a step further, sporting an auxiliary rear display designed to give users more creative control and flexibility in their photography. To power these features, the phones are equipped with new silicon-carbide L-shaped batteries, ranging from a substantial 7,000 mAh in the base model to 7,500 mAh in the Pro and Pro Max, all supporting 100W fast charging.
Xiaomi is pairing this premium hardware with an aggressive pricing strategy. In China, the base Xiaomi 17 starts at just 4,499 yuan (approximately USD 630), establishing it as a high-performance, lower-cost alternative to Apple’s flagships. This launch is part of a larger long-term strategy that includes a planned USD 7 billion investment over the next decade into developing proprietary semiconductors.
Analysts believe this combination of top-tier specs and competitive pricing could significantly strengthen Xiaomi’s foothold in the premium market and put serious pressure on established leaders. While a global rollout date for the 17-series remains unconfirmed, its debut is poised to influence pricing and innovation across the entire industry.
