Humanoid robot company 1X has taken a significant step forward in robotics with the unveiling of its Neo Beta bipedal humanoid robot, designed specifically for home use. The launch of the Neo Beta prototype marks a pivotal moment for 1X, transitioning from conceptualization to tangible development, as the company seeks to integrate advanced robotics into everyday life.
The Neo Beta robot, first revealed in June, showcases bio-inspired design elements that enable it to operate safely alongside humans. A video accompanying the announcement illustrates Neo’s ability to function seamlessly in environments populated by people, highlighting its potential to revolutionize household tasks.
Standing at 5.5 feet and weighing 66 pounds, Neo is designed to perform general-purpose tasks autonomously using its built-in AI. Despite its lightweight frame, Neo is remarkably strong, capable of lifting up to 154 pounds—more than double its own weight—and carrying loads of up to 44 pounds. Additionally, the robot can reach speeds of up to 7.5 mph, making it both agile and versatile for various domestic applications.
1X is set to mass-produce Neo at its facility in Moss, Norway, signaling the company’s commitment to bringing this innovative technology into homes on a larger scale. However, the initial rollout will be limited, with a select number of units being deployed in homes for research and development purposes. This strategic approach will allow 1X to gather essential feedback and refine Neo’s capabilities in real-world settings before a broader release.
Safety remains a paramount concern for 1X, as emphasized by the company’s CEO, Bernt Bornich. “Safety is the cornerstone that allows us to confidently introduce Neo Beta into homes, where it will gather essential feedback and demonstrate its capabilities in real-world settings,” Bornich said. “This year, we are deploying a limited number of Neo units in selected homes for research and development purposes. Doing so means we are taking another step toward achieving our mission.”
