The company, which just raised $5 million in seed funding led by Menlo Ventures, aims to empower developers to focus on creative, high-value tasks while the AI handles routine operations like writing tests, managing dependencies, and updating documentation.
All Hands AI isn’t just another AI tool. It takes inspiration from Cognition AI’s Devin demo, a system that can plan and execute complex engineering tasks. But unlike the closed-source Devin, All Hands AI is built in the open, with the aim of making the technology available to the entire development community. What started as a simple text file on GitHub has evolved into OpenHands, a project that now boasts over 30,000 stars and 150 contributors. OpenHands is designed to act as a proactive pair programmer, managing the nitty-gritty of code maintenance and asking developers for confirmation when changes in one part of the application affect others.
Robert Brennan, CEO of All Hands AI, believes this open-source approach will drive the future of AI-powered development. Developers, he argues, still prefer adopting open-source tools, especially those that impact their daily workflow. The company’s mission is to offer a seamless AI-powered experience, helping developers work more efficiently by automating the mundane tasks that take up much of their time.
While tools like GitHub Copilot are already assisting developers, Brennan believes there is still a gap when it comes to handling the entire “agentic loop of writing code.” The goal of All Hands AI is to create a system that could potentially take on more complex tasks, although human developers will still need to remain involved in the process. With the first funding round, the team is focused on building out its technology stack, with future plans to integrate into popular development environments like VS Code.
To sustain its open-source model, All Hands AI plans to monetize through paid, closed-source enterprise features. By offering complementary tools that deliver value to large companies, the startup aims to ensure financial contributions from enterprises while keeping its core platform open and accessible to all.
With support from investors like Menlo Ventures, Pillar VC, Betaworks, and Rebellion, as well as industry leaders like Hugging Face co-founder Thom Wolf and PyTorch creator Soumith Chintala, All Hands AI is poised to reshape how developers interact with code, making the development process faster, smarter, and more efficient.
