The Polaris Dawn mission, launched in September 2023, marked a major milestone in commercial space exploration. Aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, a crew of four astronauts—Jared Isaacman, Scott Poteet, Sarah Gillis, and Anna Menon—set off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. One of the mission’s key objectives was to conduct the first-ever commercial spacewalk, a feat that would take place beyond the International Space Station (ISS). This spacewalk will test innovative technology that could pave the way for future space exploration.
After a series of delays caused by technical issues and weather conditions, the Falcon 9 rocket successfully lifted off from Launch Complex-39A at 5:23 a.m. EDT. The spacecraft reached orbit, climbing to an altitude higher than any human mission since Apollo 17 in 1972. Polaris Dawn’s Crew Dragon capsule settled into an elliptical orbit, with plans to reach an altitude of 870 miles above Earth, a record in space travel for modern missions.
Besides breaking altitude records, the mission had humanitarian goals. It aimed to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, continuing the momentum of Isaacman’s 2021 Inspiration4 mission, which raised $250 million for the hospital.
The crew will spend five days in orbit conducting numerous scientific experiments, but the mission’s crowning moment will be the commercial spacewalk. On day three, Isaacman and Gillis will step outside the spacecraft to test SpaceX’s newly designed extravehicular activity (EVA) spacesuit. Due to the absence of an airlock on the Crew Dragon capsule, the entire cabin will be depressurized, exposing all four astronauts to the vacuum of space during the operation.
Aside from the spacewalk, Polaris Dawn’s agenda includes a demonstration of SpaceX’s Starlink technology, with the crew planning to transmit a surprise message via the satellite constellation. The mission is expected to conclude with a splashdown off the Florida coast, marking a successful return after six days in space.
