Apple (AAPL) has given developers an early look at its upcoming Apple Intelligence AI platform with the release of the latest developer betas for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Released on Monday, the betas, named iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia, are the first to feature Apple’s highly anticipated Apple Intelligence software, which was initially unveiled at the Worldwide Developer Conference in June.
Apple’s developer beta program grants app creators access to upcoming software versions, allowing them to test new features and integrate them into their own apps. In addition to developer betas, Apple releases public betas for regular users to try out the latest software offerings before their general availability in the fall.
While the developer and public betas for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia had already been launched, the latest developer betas introduce a suite of Apple Intelligence features. These include Writing Tools, an enhanced version of Siri capable of understanding both voice and text inputs, AI options in Mail such as email summarizations and Smart Replies, and AI-powered summarization for transcriptions.

Future developer betas will incorporate Apple’s ChatGPT integration and the ability to use Siri for actions within third-party apps. Developers can access Apple Intelligence through a new Apple Intelligence and Siri button in their device’s Settings menu. From there, they can join a waitlist, allowing them to start using the feature within a few hours. This waitlist is in place to prevent overwhelming Apple’s cloud services, as Apple Intelligence utilizes both on-device and cloud processing.
Apple’s announcement follows a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman indicating that Apple will launch Apple Intelligence in October, rather than the usual September debut for the latest iPhone. This suggests that buyers of the next-generation iPhone, expected to be called the iPhone 16, may need to wait a few weeks to use the AI platform.
According to Gurman, Apple is taking additional time to develop Apple Intelligence while giving developers more time to familiarize themselves with the software and create new features. Apple Intelligence represents a significant development for the company, introducing some of the most substantial changes to its software platforms in years. It also marks the first time many Apple users will experience generative AI technologies. Ensuring a smooth rollout will be crucial for the millions of users who will access and use Apple Intelligence.
Analysts on Wall Street believe that Apple Intelligence could boost iPhone sales, leading to an elevated upgrade cycle. However, it is notable that only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will support the software, requiring users with older models to upgrade.
Some argue that the strong sales cycle expected in the coming year may be driven more by pent-up demand from consumers ready to upgrade their phones purchased around the onset of the pandemic, rather than solely by the introduction of Apple Intelligence.
Apple will also need to avoid pitfalls similar to those faced by competitors like Google, which experienced issues with its AI Overviews service for Search. Google (GOOG, GOOGL) and Samsung have already launched generative AI features for their smartphones, with Samsung introducing its Galaxy AI alongside the Galaxy S24 and Google showcasing AI capabilities in the Pixel 8 in October 2023. Google is set to debut the next-generation Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold phones on August 13, focusing on how generative AI software will enhance user experience.
