Apple is setting its sights on the foldable smartphone market, reportedly collaborating closely with Samsung on an innovative new foldable iPhone, slated for release in the second half of 2026. According to renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to leverage Samsung’s expertise in foldable displays and partner with South Korean manufacturer Fine M-Tec to achieve something that’s eluded other foldable phones: a truly crease-free screen.

Foldable smartphones have been available for several years, yet consumers remain hesitant due to common issues like the distracting crease in the center of the inner display. Samsung’s recent Galaxy Z Fold 7, while impressive, still has a noticeable crease, something that detracts from user experience when watching videos or viewing images. Apple’s stringent requirement for a crease-free screen has effectively raised the bar, forcing Samsung to follow suit. Kuo’s insights reveal that Samsung’s next model, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, will also use Fine M-Tec’s laser-drilled metal display plates, meaning both companies might launch truly seamless foldable phones simultaneously.

The anticipated foldable iPhone is expected to boast a 7.8-inch inner screen, complemented by a convenient 5.5-inch outer display for quick access. It’s said to feature two rear cameras, a single front-facing camera, and Touch ID integrated into the power button—potentially a move to avoid complexity and maximize internal space that would be compromised by a Face ID system.

For Apple, the foldable phone initiative comes at a critical moment. Despite its strong global presence and brand loyalty, Apple has faced sluggish revenue growth in recent years. Over the last six months, the company’s net sales have grown by a modest 4%, reaching $219.7 billion. Product revenue, which remains Apple’s dominant revenue stream, has risen by an even smaller margin of just 2%.

Introducing a foldable device with genuine innovations, like a flawless crease-free screen and possibly advanced AI features, could significantly reignite consumer interest and, importantly, investor confidence. Historically, Apple has successfully revitalized its market presence by perfecting existing technologies with attention to user experience details, and a foldable iPhone might follow this pattern.

Should Apple manage to deliver a foldable smartphone without the customary drawbacks of current devices, it could not only set a new industry benchmark but also boost its market position and provide the growth catalyst investors are waiting for. For both consumers and investors alike, the foldable iPhone represents a promising next chapter, potentially ushering Apple back to higher growth trajectories and reaffirming its status as a tech innovation leader.
