OpenAI is taking a significant step toward addressing the immense computing power required by its rapidly expanding ChatGPT platform. The company revealed on Wednesday that it will now utilize Google’s cloud infrastructure, adding Google Cloud to its roster of suppliers alongside Microsoft, CoreWeave, and Oracle.
The decision underscores OpenAI’s growing need for additional computing capacity amid surging demand for ChatGPT. Initially reliant exclusively on Microsoft’s Azure platform, OpenAI’s evolving relationship with the tech giant—now also considered a competitor—has prompted diversification in its cloud service providers.
By partnering with Google Cloud, OpenAI gains access to extensive data center resources in key global regions, including the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom. This is a notable win for Google, whose cloud business, while growing, still trails industry leaders Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Google Cloud already hosts AI workloads for Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI executives.
OpenAI’s expansion is part of a broader strategic shift. Microsoft recently altered its agreement with OpenAI to a right-of-first-refusal model, allowing the startup greater flexibility in sourcing additional computing resources. However, Microsoft retains exclusive rights to OpenAI’s programming interfaces, maintaining a strategic relationship despite this diversification.
The need for massive computational power is driven by the GPU-intensive nature of OpenAI’s large language models. Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly expressed frustration with capacity constraints, urgently calling for additional GPU supplies. Since then, OpenAI has aggressively pursued expanded partnerships, including a significant five-year agreement with CoreWeave worth nearly $12 billion and prior arrangements integrating Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
This new partnership with Google Cloud highlights how critical reliable and scalable computing infrastructure has become in the highly competitive AI industry. For Google, the deal represents validation of its growing capabilities and investment in AI-specific infrastructure. For OpenAI, it provides a broader base to support ChatGPT’s rapid global adoption, ensuring smoother scaling and better service for millions of users worldwide.
