The flight marks the culmination of a three-year wait for Sun, who won his seat in a high-profile auction with a staggering $28 million bid.
The mission, designated NS-34, lifted off from Blue Origin’s West Texas launch site at 8:43 a.m. local time on Sunday, August 3rd. The entire suborbital journey aboard the fully reusable New Shepard rocket was a brief but spectacular 10 minutes. The capsule separated from its booster minutes after launch, allowing the crew to experience several minutes of weightlessness as they soared past the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space. The capsule then safely returned to Earth, touching down at 8:53 a.m.
Justin Sun’s journey to this flight began in 2021 when he won the seat in a highly publicized auction. He was originally scheduled to be on Blue Origin’s landmark first human flight alongside Jeff Bezos in July 2021, but a scheduling conflict forced him to postpone. His eventual flight fulfills the promise of that multi-million dollar ticket, underscoring the exclusive, high-cost nature of the emerging space tourism market.
Joining Sun on the flight was a diverse group of individuals: real estate investor Arvi Bahal, Turkish businessman Gökhan Erdem, meteorologist Deborah Martorell, educator Lionel Pitchford, and entrepreneur J.D. Russell. The international nature of the crew was highlighted by Phil Joyce, Senior Vice President of Blue Origin. “The view of our fragile planet from space has a unifying effect on all who witness it, and I am always eager to see how our astronauts use this experience for the benefit of Earth,” Joyce said in a statement.
The successful completion of the NS-34 mission further solidifies Blue Origin’s cadence in the space tourism sector.
