Canon is set to launch its flagship mirrorless camera, the EOS R1, this fall, aiming to retain professional customers and fend off competition from rivals Sony and Nikon. This move marks Canon’s effort to solidify its position as the top camera maker amidst growing challenges.

The standout feature of the EOS R1 is its advanced autofocus system, which can capture facial expressions of volleyball players even when photographed through a net. The camera maintains its lock on a single target, even when another person steps in front of the subject. This is made possible by an image sensor developed by Canon that converts light into electrical signals, coupled with an image engine that rapidly analyzes large amounts of data, enhancing overall performance.

“We focused on reliable performance,” said Executive Vice President Go Tokura, head of Canon’s imaging group. Tokura added that the camera is designed to perform well even in harsh environments like rainy weather.

Following its planned November launch in Japan, Canon will produce 3,700 units per month. Priced at 1,089,000 yen ($6,926), the EOS R1 is positioned higher than flagship models from Sony and Nikon, which cost between 800,000 yen and 900,000 yen. In the U.S., the EOS R1 will retail for $6,299. Despite the higher price point, Canon is targeting the professional sector to drive demand.

Canon designates “1” in a product name to signify a flagship model, combining the company’s best performance and reliability. Since entering the full-frame mirrorless market in 2018, Canon has lacked a flagship product in this segment. Nikon and Sony introduced their flagship models in 2021, making Canon the last major camera maker to do so.

The launch of the EOS R1 is also aimed at countering Sony, which Tokura identified as Canon’s “biggest rival.” In 2023, Canon led the global mirrorless camera shipments with a 41% market share, ahead of Sony’s 32%, according to Techno Systems Research. However, research firm BCN reported that Sony overtook Canon in Japan unit sales in 2023.

Sony’s strength lies in its leading image sensor business, which it uses to enhance camera performance. For example, Sony introduced the first consumer-level, interchangeable-lens digital camera with a global shutter mechanism capable of capturing fast-moving objects, like a golf club swing, with zero distortion. This technology was notably highlighted when images of an assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump were captured using Sony’s latest flagship model, the Alpha 9 III.

“Sony’s performance has improved, and some people are switching from Canon to Sony,” said a professional photographer with over 20 years of experience, primarily in landscape photography.

The digital camera market has significantly contracted, with only 7.72 million units delivered last year—just 6% of the peak in 2010, according to the Tokyo-based Camera & Imaging Products Association. The rise of smartphones has squeezed the market for consumer cameras, leading Sony to focus on mid-end and high-end cameras. Although Canon offers cameras for amateur photographers, the company is heavily promoting its flagship models for professionals. For instance, Canon is providing over 100 flagship cameras for free to photographers covering the Summer Olympics in Paris.
