OpenAI’s rollout of ChatGPT’s new advanced voice mode has captivated the small group of ChatGPT Plus subscribers granted early access. The feature has garnered positive feedback, with various clips appearing online that showcase its capabilities, including singing, mimicking accents, correcting language pronunciation, and engaging in narrative storytelling.
In one notable demonstration, X user @nickfloats asked ChatGPT to “tell me a story as if you’re an airline pilot telling it to passengers on a flight.” The chatbot responded almost immediately, altering its audio to sound like it was coming from an intercom. Although ChatGPT struggled with more complex requests like layering engine sounds, its voice remained clear and emotive, and it handled user interruptions well.
In another conversation uploaded to YouTube, ChatGPT claimed it could handle inputs in “dozens of languages,” though the exact number varies depending on dialects and regional variations. One clip showed the chatbot correcting the pronunciation of French words, providing specific pointers on adjusting inflection. Another demo featured ChatGPT speaking Turkish in response to a detailed request to tell an emotive story. While some Turkish users noted that the accent didn’t sound native, ChatGPT successfully completed the story and reacted appropriately by laughing and crying at certain points.
ChatGPT’s advanced voice feature also demonstrates a passable job with regional US accents. One video showcased a variety of examples, including New York, Boston, Wisconsin, and a stereotypical “valley girl.” The feature extends to singing in different styles, as seen in a blues-style rendition of “Happy Birthday” and humorous attempts to imitate what animals like frogs and cats would sound like singing the same tune.
A range of male and female-sounding voices was present across these demonstrations, although the Scarlett Johansson-like “Sky” voice, which was removed from the service in May, was notably absent.
Overall, the new advanced voice mode in ChatGPT is proving to be a versatile tool for language learners, performers, and anyone looking to engage with AI in a more interactive and entertaining way.
