A new scientific paper reports that chimpanzees are capable of producing sounds that mimic human words. This follows recent research revealing that chimpanzees can gesture to one another in conversation, similar to humans. The new study analyzed two archived videos of chimpanzees “uttering” words on camera — one from the mid-2000s and another from the 1960s. In both instances, the apes uttered the word “mama” when given cues from their handlers, challenging previous beliefs that speech was beyond chimpanzees’ neural circuitry.
“Great ape vocal production capacities have been underestimated,” the paper stated. “Chimpanzees possess the neural building blocks necessary for speech.” The more recent of the two examples, filmed at the Suncoast Primate Center in Palm Harbor, Florida, features a chimpanzee named Johnny speaking the word in exchange for a red Twizzler when prompted by a caretaker. Johnny’s deep-pitched cadence sounded eerily similar to Andy Serkis’ English-fluent chimpanzee Caesar from the “Planet of the Apes” film franchise, as several commenters on the 16-year-old clip pointed out.
Researchers noted that, according to the video’s origin, Johnny “knew that [saying] Mama would get him anything he wanted as long as it was on his diet.” The older footage, from 1962, shows Renata, a chimpanzee in Italy, speaking the word when given a touch to the chin from a human. The researchers referred to this behavior as a form of “reinforcement learning.”
These findings suggest that the vocal production capacities of great apes have been significantly underestimated. The ability of Johnny and Renata to mimic human speech indicates that chimpanzees may possess the neural building blocks necessary for speech, a revelation that could have profound implications for our understanding of language evolution.
The study also aligns with recent discoveries that chimpanzees use gestures to communicate in a manner akin to human conversation. This combination of gestural and vocal communication abilities underscores the complex cognitive capabilities of these primates and suggests that the gap between human and chimpanzee communication may be narrower than previously thought.

The findings have sparked renewed interest in the study of primate communication and cognition. By examining the conditions under which these vocalizations occur, researchers hope to gain deeper insights into the evolution of speech and the neurological foundations of language.
