China’s Chang’e-6 lunar probe has returned to Earth with the first-ever samples from the Moon’s unexplored far side. The probe landed in the Inner Mongolia desert on Tuesday after a nearly two-month-long mission fraught with risks. This groundbreaking achievement marks a significant milestone in China’s burgeoning space program, as it is the only country to have successfully landed on the Moon’s far side, a feat first accomplished in 2019.
The far side of the Moon, facing away from Earth, presents a unique set of challenges due to its distance and rugged terrain, characterized by giant craters and few flat surfaces. Scientists are particularly interested in this less-explored region as it is believed to contain traces of ice, which could be harvested for water, oxygen, and hydrogen, potentially supporting future lunar missions and human habitation.
The Chang’e-6 mission, named after the moon goddess Chang’e in Chinese mythology, is a source of immense national pride. State media showcased officials planting the Chinese flag with a flourish upon the capsule’s landing. President Xi Jinping congratulated the mission’s team, expressing hope that China would continue exploring deep space and reaching new heights in unraveling the mysteries of the universe for the benefit of humanity and national advancement.
Launched in early May, the Chang’e-6 successfully landed near the Moon’s south pole a few weeks later, completing its mission in 53 days. The probe used a drill and a robotic arm to collect soil and rock samples, took photographs of the lunar surface, and planted a Chinese flag. The collected samples are expected to arrive in Beijing for analysis, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV.
This mission is China’s sixth to the Moon and its second to the far side. Scientists are eagerly awaiting the samples, which could provide crucial insights into the Moon’s formation and geological history. Catherine Heymans, the astronomer royal for Scotland, highlighted the significance of the mission. She noted that the geological activity on the Moon differs between the near side and the far side, and the samples could help test theories about the Moon’s formation 4.5 billion years ago, possibly from a collision with an early version of Earth.
“It’s incredibly exciting to see this landing successfully,” Heymans told the BBC. “The geological activity on the Moon is very different on the near side and the far side and it’s been a big puzzle why we see those differences.” She expressed hope that the samples would help researchers understand the composition of the Moon’s center and confirm whether the Earth and the Moon were once part of the same body.
Over the past decade, China has invested heavily in its space program to catch up with the US and Russia. The country aims to send a crewed mission to the Moon by 2030 and plans to establish a base on the lunar south pole eventually. The US, meanwhile, plans to return astronauts to the Moon by 2026 with its Artemis 3 mission. Analysts believe that the next space race will not just be about landing people on the Moon but also about staking claims and controlling lunar resources.
