In a bold move blending fashion, politics, and technology, Elon Musk has unveiled an AI-generated virtual runway show featuring global political leaders and tech giants. This satirical display, shared on Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter), uses AI to craft whimsical and provocative outfits for some of the world’s most influential figures.
The AI-powered fashion show, clocking just under two minutes, opens with Pope Francis strutting in a white Balenciaga-like puffer coat, reminiscent of a viral deep fake image from last year. The spectacle continues with Russian president Vladimir Putin in a rainbow-colored strapless Louis Vuitton-inspired gown, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris in a coconut-like bikini top with a “Harris 2024” skirt, and former President Donald Trump in an orange pinstripe prison-like jumpsuit adorned with “LV” logos and handcuffs.
Musk himself is also part of the show, appearing first in a sumo wrestler outfit and later in a black Tesla-emblazoned superhero suit. Unlike the other virtual models, former President Barack Obama’s avatar dons 13 different ensembles, including two gladiator-themed outfits imprinted with “Hope.” The show also features AI-generated versions of Jeff Bezos in a bill-printed ensemble with a dollar-sign-inspired “B,” Tim Cook with a MacBook Pro attached to translucent suspenders, and Mark Zuckerberg in a Speedo bathing suit with an “FB” logo.
Lynn University’s associate professor of marketing, Andrew Burnstine, noted that the AI-powered show underscores the “surreal intersection of politics, technology, and celebrity culture.” Burnstine likened the event to Moschino’s audacious fashion commentaries of past decades, describing it as a blend of satire, technology, and cultural critique.
Carl-Axel Wahlström, creative director at The Copy Lab, praised the runway show as a playful and creative use of generative AI. He hopes that influential figures might take inspiration from the show, using fashion to express their identities boldly. Wahlström compared the AI fashion video to the sampling culture of the 1990s music scene, where technology enabled new ways to remix brands and personas.
The final shot of Musk’s runway show features a Bill Clinton look-alike holding a monitor displaying a classic computer error message: “Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart.” Burnstine interpreted this as a chilling reminder of AI’s dual nature—its ability to entertain and its underlying role in data collection and control.
