Blue Origin, under the leadership of Jeff Bezos, is on the cusp of a new era with its New Glenn rocket. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has just granted a Part 450 commercial launch license, allowing the rocket to operate for the next five years. This license is a critical step, affirming the rocket’s readiness for commercial launches while ensuring public safety.
Kelvin B. Coleman, Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation at the FAA, emphasized the agency’s commitment to fostering the U.S. commercial space industry without compromising safety. The license was issued in advance of the statutory deadline, showcasing effective collaboration between Blue Origin and the FAA.
Following the announcement, Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp expressed gratitude for the partnership, signaling that the company is nearly ready for the first launch, known as NG-1. “A big thanks to the FAA for the partnership, especially over the holidays,” Limp shared on social media. “Here’s to NG-1 — we are really close, folks.”
The New Glenn rocket, towering at 98 meters, has been the focus of Blue Origin’s efforts throughout 2024. The company has been preparing for a critical hot fire test, where all seven BE-4 engines would ignite simultaneously on the launch pad. This test is essential to validate the rocket’s systems before actual launch. Although initially planned for December 19, the test was delayed, with signs of preparation observed later, hinting at a possible attempt on December 27.
The New Glenn’s first stage, powered by these BE-4 engines, is designed for reuse, with plans for landing on a barge akin to SpaceX’s Falcon 9. However, current licensing restricts the Flight Safety System to single use, with future plans for component reuse needing further compliance checks.
Blue Origin’s BE-4 engines, which also power the first stage of the United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan rocket, have already seen flight experience, providing valuable data for New Glenn’s development. At an industry conference, Blue Origin’s Vice President of Government Sales, Lars Hoffman, discussed the shared technology, hinting at a potential launch before year’s end but without confirming a specific date.
The upper stage of New Glenn features BE-3U engines, optimized for space vacuum, showcasing Blue Origin’s advancements in propulsion technology. The inaugural flight won’t carry a customer payload but will instead deploy the Blue Ring Pathfinder, aimed at validating communication and tracking technologies crucial for future missions.
Paul Ebertz, Senior Vice President at Blue Origin, highlighted the significance of this mission, “We’re excited to demonstrate Blue Ring’s advanced in-space operations on New Glenn’s inaugural mission.” This launch will also serve as a certification flight for potential National Security Space Launch missions, expanding Blue Origin’s role in national space endeavors.
Originally, NASA’s EscaPADE spacecraft was slated for this flight, but due to delays, NASA has postponed its involvement. Now, with the FAA’s license in hand and preparations for the hot fire test underway, Blue Origin looks set to make its mark in the commercial space sector, potentially before the year ends.
