Google has officially announced plans to unify two of its most prominent platforms, Android and ChromeOS, into a single, integrated operating system. Sameer Samat, President of Google’s Android ecosystem, confirmed this major shift in a recent interview with TechRadar, marking a significant step toward a more streamlined, Apple-like ecosystem for Google users.
Samat revealed this news while expressing curiosity about how users manage workflow across multiple devices—a topic he explored with TechRadar’s Lance Ulanoff, who regularly switches between Apple products like a MacBook, iPhone, and Apple Watch. “I asked because we’re going to be combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform, and I am very interested in how people are using their laptops these days and what they’re getting done,” Samat explained.
This decision aligns closely with Google’s ongoing efforts to harmonize its various operating systems, devices, and software. Although ChromeOS has supported Android apps for years, this new initiative will go further, creating an ecosystem in which laptops, phones, tablets, and upcoming Android XR devices can seamlessly communicate and function together, much like Apple’s tightly integrated product suite.
Hints of this shift have been visible for some time. Last year, Google began to align ChromeOS more closely with Android technology, gradually blurring the lines between the two operating systems. Additionally, recent iterations of Android have included desktop-style interfaces similar to Samsung’s DeX mode, enabling users to experience a more cohesive workflow when transitioning from mobile to desktop environments.
While critics might argue that Google should have unified Android and ChromeOS from the start, the move—though belated—is strategically wise, laying a strong foundation for future innovations.
