In a landmark announcement that will reshape its approach to personal computing, Google has confirmed it will merge its ChromeOS and Android operating systems. The winner of this long-rumored consolidation is clear: Android is set to become the single, unified OS for Google’s entire ecosystem, from phones and tablets to laptops.
The news was made official by Sameer Samat, Google’s president for the Android ecosystem, during an appearance at Qualcomm’s Summit event. He revealed that users will see the results of this merger in 2026, as Google pivots its strategy to focus on artificial intelligence.
“The opportunity for us that we see is how do we accelerate all the AI advancement that we’re doing on Android and bring that to the laptop form factor as rapidly as possible?” Samat explained. He described the new strategy as taking the familiar ChromeOS user experience and “re-baselining the technology underneath it on Android.” This will allow Google to rapidly deploy its advanced Gemini AI services across a wider range of devices.
While Chromebooks have successfully carved out a niche, particularly in the education market, Google sees the Android codebase as the key to its future AI ambitions. Samat pointed to Android’s success on tablets as proof of its capability to power larger form-factor devices. The merger aims to create a more cohesive experience where laptops and the broader Android ecosystem “work seamlessly together.”
Qualcomm will play a crucial role in this transition, adapting its powerful smartphone and laptop chips to run the new, unified Android operating system on PCs. Beyond the immediate focus on AI, Samat noted that a single Android platform would also open up opportunities for integrating XR (extended reality) technologies more easily across different devices.
This strategic shift marks a new chapter for Google, betting big on a unified, AI-centric Android to power the next generation of personal computers.
