Microsoft has officially launched AI Agent Mode and Office Agent for its Microsoft 365 suite, ushering in a new era of “vibe working” designed to automate complex and tedious tasks in applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The announcement on September 28 marks a significant step forward in integrating deeply autonomous AI into everyday productivity software.

The new Agent Mode, which integrates directly into Excel and Word, allows users to generate sophisticated documents and spreadsheets from simple, natural language prompts. This powerful feature leverages OpenAI’s latest reasoning models to deconstruct complex requests into a series of manageable, automated steps. It’s a concept Microsoft likens to “vibe coding,” which has already transformed software development.

“In the same way vibe coding has transformed software development, the latest reasoning models in Copilot unlock agentic productivity for Office artifacts,” said Sumit Chauhan, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Office Product Group. “It’s the new pattern of work for human-agent collaboration.”

In Excel, Agent Mode is a data analysis powerhouse, capable of creating visualizations, building financial models, and generating comprehensive reports on its own. It can even evaluate its own work, identify and fix issues, and iterate on a task until it produces a verified outcome. For Word users, Agent Mode turns document creation into an interactive, collaborative process where the AI handles the heavy lifting of drafting, refining, and formatting content.

Alongside this, Microsoft introduced Office Agent in Copilot chat. Interestingly, this feature is powered by Anthropic’s AI models, showcasing Microsoft’s strategy of using different AI providers to optimize for specific tasks. Office Agent is a chat-first experience that can build entire PowerPoint presentations and Word documents, conducting web research and asking clarifying questions to ensure the final product meets the user’s needs.

These new features are currently available to customers in Microsoft’s Frontier program, which includes Microsoft 365 Copilot licensed customers and Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscribers. For now, Agent Mode works in the web versions of Word and Excel, with desktop integration planned for the near future.

The rollout is part of Microsoft’s larger vision for “agentic AI,” where specialized AI agents can collaborate on complex business processes, moving beyond the model of isolated digital assistants.
