Google is preparing to release a mandatory update for all Pixel 6a devices next week in response to widespread battery overheating issues. The update is designed to limit battery performance in order to prevent further problems and ensure user safety. This patch follows reports that some Pixel 6a units were experiencing overheating during normal use, with potential risks of damage or even injury.
Ahead of the update, Google has quietly removed all OTA and factory images for the Pixel 6a from its developer portal. The “Factory Images for Nexus and Pixel Devices” page now displays a placeholder labeled “coming soon” where downloads for the Pixel 6a would typically appear. This signals that the next available software version will be the mandatory update, and Google is positioning it as the only authorized version going forward.
The forced update will be installed on every Pixel 6a regardless of user consent. According to Google, the update is specifically triggered once the device reaches approximately 400 charging cycles—roughly equivalent to two years of average use. Once that threshold is crossed, the update will automatically take effect and throttle battery output to prevent overheating.
This is not the first time Google has taken this kind of action. A similar issue occurred earlier this year with the Pixel 4a, when Google pulled its factory images due to battery concerns. In that case, the next software patch served as the only available version for download on Google’s official site, just as it’s doing now for the Pixel 6a.
To ease concerns and support affected users, Google has confirmed that those experiencing battery problems will have additional options. These include a no-cost battery replacement or a potential cash payment that can be applied as credit toward a newer Pixel model. Google has not yet announced the exact criteria or timeline for these compensation options but is expected to share more details after the update rolls out.
The move reflects Google’s growing caution around battery safety in its hardware lineup. With overheating incidents becoming a serious concern, particularly after years of scrutiny across the industry, Google is choosing to act preemptively to avoid more severe outcomes.
For Pixel 6a users, the mandatory update is unavoidable and designed with long-term device safety in mind. While it may reduce battery performance, the tradeoff is better reliability and a lower risk of battery failure down the line. Google advises all users to keep their devices up to date and to contact support if they notice unusual battery behavior or performance issues.
