NASA’s Perseverance rover has recently achieved a remarkable feat on Mars, capturing breathtaking views of the expansive Jezero Crater from a particularly slippery and steep slope. After nearly seven months of diligent exploration and sample collection within the crater’s flatlands, Perseverance took a strategic pause to survey its previous work before embarking on the arduous task of scaling the crater’s western rim. This mission marks a significant milestone in the rover’s ongoing quest to uncover signs of past life on Mars and gather invaluable samples for future return to Earth.

The Perseverance rover, a car-sized marvel, landed on the floor of the 28-mile-wide (45-kilometer-wide) Jezero Crater in February 2021. Its primary objectives included searching for evidence of ancient microbial life and collecting rock and soil samples to be stored for eventual retrieval by future missions. Having completed its initial scientific endeavors in the crater’s expansive flats, Perseverance is now venturing towards new and diverse Martian landscapes by navigating the challenging terrain of the crater’s western rim.

Late last month, Perseverance paused its ascent to capture a series of stunning photographs, which have since been stitched together into a mosaic by mission team members. This composite image, taken on September 27, showcases many of the significant landmarks Perseverance has encountered during its mission, providing both scientists and the public with a vivid glimpse into the rover’s journey and the Martian environment.

Rick Welch, Perseverance’s deputy project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California, emphasized the enormity of the challenge faced by the rover. “The image not only shows our past and present, but also shows the biggest challenge to getting where we want to be in the future,” Welch stated. “If you look at the right side of the mosaic, you begin to get an idea what we’re dealing with. Mars didn’t want to make it easy for anyone to get to the top of this ridge.”

Perseverance began its climb up the western rim in mid-August, targeting a location the mission team refers to as “Faraway Rock.” Despite the rover’s advanced engineering and autonomous capabilities, the journey has proven to be exceptionally tough. The ridge features a 20-degree slope covered in loose sand and dust atop a brittle crust, presenting a unique combination of steepness and slipperiness that poses significant obstacles. Camden Miller, a planner and driver for Perseverance’s mission at JPL, highlighted the unprecedented nature of this challenge. “Mars rovers have driven over steeper terrain, and they’ve driven over more slippery terrain, but this is the first time one had to handle both — and on this scale,” Miller explained.

To navigate this difficult terrain, the rover team has employed several innovative strategies. These include driving Perseverance backwards, adopting a switchback-heavy “cross-slope” approach, and staying close to the slope’s northern edges where larger, traction-enhancing rocks are more prevalent. Of these methods, the northern-edge approach has proven to be the most effective, providing the rover with better traction and stability. Consequently, the team plans to prioritize this strategy as they continue their ascent. “That’s the plan right now, but we may have to change things up the road,” Miller noted. “No Mars rover mission has tried to climb up a mountain this big this fast. The science team wants to get to the top of the crater rim as soon as possible because of the scientific opportunities up there. It’s up to us rover planners to figure out a way to get them there.”

The Perseverance rover’s ongoing mission not only advances our understanding of Mars’ geological and potential biological history but also pushes the boundaries of robotic exploration in extraterrestrial environments.
